Promote Your Book Online With A Short Article

Dissatisfied with your book sales? With book signings, press releases, back of the room sales?

So many authors spend a lot of time and money on promotion that doesn't work. It's time to do what authors do best--write a short article. People visit article direcories looking for great free content for their site and their eines. Some will be attracted to your topic. Follow these ten steps to write an article high-traffic web sites will clamor for with a link back to where your book is sold.

1.Choose a topic that relates to your book. Make sure this how-to article has useful, needed information. One site who markets to professional speakers just published your coach's article "What Makes One Book Out Sell Another."

2.Know your article's thesis. The thesis is the number one solution your article offers to its reader. In the introduction above, the thesis is stated in the last line, "Use these 10 ways to write an article top web sites will clamor for with a link back to where your book is sold."

3.Know your preferred audience. Just as your book has a target audience, so should your article. One book, "How to Write Your E-Book or Other Book—Fast! is a short, easy-to-read, step-by-step guide to assist professionals and other businesses with writing, publishing and selling their book.

4.Write a sparkling opening. Like a headline in a press release or on your book's back cover, your first sentence should grab your readers by the collar so they will keep reading. The opening could use a shocking fact, a question, a benefit, or a compelling story right out of your book. Make the opening a short paragraph, even a single line. Readers want short, concise, digestible information, especially on the Internet.

5.Illustrate a need. Whatever your topic, show your readers why they need your information. If you have written a book on listening, in your short article discuss how much is at stake for not listening such as divorce or lost business. You may also share the benefits.

6.Give a brief background of the problem or situation you will solve. One client wrote a book, "The Cure for Multiple Sclerosis." She shares that over 2 million people worldwide with Multiple Sclerosis are diagnosed incurable, that doctors are pressured to use pharmaceuticals, and that the health industry is not about getting people well, but about making money.

7. Share the problems that result. In "The Cure for Multiple Sclerosis," the problem is that most people rely on western medicine which does not have the answers. Big money is not spent on alternative or complementary ways to prevent and cure chronic diseases, so people with problems get drugs that deplete the immune system.

8. Give the solution. Your book offers solutions to your reader's challenges or problems.So must your article. Show your readers how to get excellent health, how they can write a book, make more money, or have better relationships.

9.Show them where to get the solution and how. The article, "How to Listen at Work," needs to suggest where to go or what to do next. You may name a quality book to read. Mention a seminar or training, or recommend a coach. You may even mention a web site address or 800 number.

Place your article on as many high traffic internet sites and aritcle directories as you can. Just as feature articles in newspapers are seven times as powerful as advertising, so is your article seven times as powerful as other promotion. People are looking for free information online. That's the major reason they surf!

10 Article Marketing Mistakes To Avoid

In no particular order, here are 10 of the most common mistakes that Article Writers make:

# 1) Creating an un-targeted title: The title of an article is arguably the most important factor in getting it read. If the title is not eye-catching or interesting, you have most likely wasted your time in writing it, as no one will read it.

# 2) Including the article summary in the article body: The summary of an article is meant to provide some insight as to what the article is about. The summary is not supposed to be the first paragraph of the article. Many article directories will reject your article if you include the article summary in the “Article Summary” field as well as the “Article Body.” After reading the article summary, your viewers should not be reading the same paragraph over again.

# 3) Including your Website links inside the article body: When you are writing the body of your article, you should have the interest of your viewers in mind, not yourself. This is not only frowned upon by most article directories it is also poor marketing. Use the signature block to promote your links, as that is what it is for.

# 4) Using “hard-link breaks” in your article: Many people believe that the use of “hard-line breaks” will make the article easier to read. Whether this is true or not, it looks very unprofessional and most article directories will reject your article because of it. A hard-line break is created when an article does not wrap naturally. In other words, the writer hits the return (enter) key in the middle of a sentence to make the line shorter. Just write your paragraphs in a normal format (like this article) and you will not have anything to worry about.

#5) Submitting to an irrelevant category: This is a common mistake that constantly costs Authors valuable Website traffic. Most article directories offer email alerts and RSS feeds. These alerts and feeds are used more than you may think. Ezine publishers frequently sign up for email alerts in the categories that are relevant to their list. If your article is submitted elsewhere you could easily lose valuable exposure.

# 6) Including an irrelevant signature block: Contrary to popular belief, the primary benefit to article marketing is not link building. Even if it were, having a link on an irrelevant page will not do you much good. It is all about getting people to first read your article and second to follow-through to the links in your signature block. With this in mind, why would you talk about your dog care Website in the signature block for an article on SEO (for example)? It just doesn’t make sense. But, the article directory publishers love it, as the viewer will stay on their Website and click on their adverts rather than yours.

#7) Failing to include the http:// prefix within links: This is normally an honest mistake. Although link building is not the biggest benefit to article marketing, it is a factor. Also, most people who are browsing the web are looking for quick resources. If they cannot just click on a link they will move on. Even if the article directory software makes the link active without the http:// prefix, it will most likely not be active when/if it gets picked up by ezine/newsletter owners.

#8) Stuffing keywords into the article body: If you are not familiar with Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) I will tell you that it is the future of search. Many people believe that Google, for one, has already implementing this new complex software that more or less relates certain keywords with other related terms. This means that “keyword density” is a thing of the past and may actually hurt you if your keywords are placed in a unnatural way. You should always be writing for people, not search engines!

#9) Submitting Private Label Rights (PLR) content: Submitting content that you do not own the full rights to is not only going to do you little to no good marketing wise, as it is either all over the Internet or will be in the future, it may very well get your account suspended with the sites that you submit it to. I still see it on a weekly (sometimes daily) basis though.

#10) Submitting to hundreds of different article sites: Mass article submission is a method of the past and is not longer effective. The Search Engine algorithms are getting more and more complex by the day. Not only is it considered a light form of spam to the search engines, serious Ezine and Newsletter publishers frown upon it as well.

A keyword can consist of from one word or a long phrase (long tail keywords), and is basically the words used by people when carrying out an internet search on a search engine for the information they are seeking. Hence, if somebody types “pink cat collars with bells” into their search engine, then that is the keyword they are using, and if that corresponds with the title of your web page, and its subject, that page has a good chance of being listed in the search engine they are using for that keyword.

Your web page entitled “pink cat collars with bells” will be listed above a web page on the theme “cat collars”, or even “pink cat collars” to anybody using “pink cat collars with bells” as their search term. Tip four then. Make sure your web page is optimized for the keyword that you want to target.

You can use keyword research software to do this. For a beginner a simply tool such as the Google Keyword Tool is sufficient. This is free to use and provides the most popular keywords for a basic keyword that you provide. Thus, if you provide cat blankets, it will provide you with a large number of keyword pertaining to cat blankets that Google visitors have used relating to cat blankets.

The best tip you can be given is my second: get a website. If you want to make money from the internet then you must have your own website. You don’t need a product yet, because they are easy to find. A website, however, gives you a door on the internet through which people can enter and find all that you can offer them. There are many free web hosts available, but your best advice is to ignore these and pay for one.

A web host provides you with a platform on which you can build your website. Anything from about $9 a month is generally OK, though the more you pay the more you get. For under $25 you can a web host that provides you with unlimited domains (website names), unlimited email addresses, autoresponders, a checkout system, a payment portal so that you can accept credit and debit cards, web page design software, html editor and more.

You are advised to go for the best you can afford, and at least make sure your host offers autoresponders, since separate ones can cost a lot of money that you don’t want to pay as a beginner. You will also need a domain name for your site, and that should be a keyword that suits your product. First, then, decide on a product as stated below, then choose a keyword and make that your domain name, as near as you can from available domains.

Have you ever seen all these adverts for products and loads of free ebooks given as bonuses if you buy the product? Believe me; if you read everything provided to you free online, you would never have time to do anything else. That is why most ebooks go unread. Why do you think they are being given free? If you wrote a book would you be happy about it being given away free by one of your customers? Of course not!

They are being given free because they no longer have sufficient practical use for them to be sold. It’s as simple as that.
